BALTIMORE, Md. - After wrapping up their six-match road trip on Tuesday night, the Greyhounds return to Reitz Arena for the first time in over two weeks to host Morgan State University in a non-conference match beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Now 3-12 on the season, the Greyhounds suffered a three-game loss to Robert Morris on Tuesday night to end the six-match trip with a 1-5 record. Senior outside hitter Becky Corb and sophomore Christina Greenup each led the Greyhounds with 11 kills while Corb also added eight assists. Freshman setter Marcellee Williams recorded her team-leading sixth "double double" of the season with 27 assists and 11 digs. Senior libero Jamie Arndt added 15 digs for the Greyhounds, who have played 13 of their first 15 matches on the road.
Corb leads the team with 199 kills on the season after recording double-digit kills for the eighth straight match. She is just 48 kills shy of breaking the Loyola career record, which is held by Sarah Becker, '94. She is also just 89 digs away from becoming the second player in school history to amass 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in their career, joining Shauna Lagatol, '99 on that exclusive list. She entered the week ranked second in the conference in kills per game.
Arndt is also approaching a career milestone, needing just 74 digs to reach 1,000 for her career. She has had 10 or more digs in a match nine times this season, including five of the last six matches.
The Lady Bears are 4-12 on the season after earning their second MEAC win of the season, a four-game victory over Howard University on Tuesday night. Sophomore Esther Johnson led Morgan State with a match-high 22 kills in the victory while sophomore Ashley Preston added 21 digs. Johnson leads the team with 178 kills on the season while Preston has recorded 248 digs. Senior setter Sharleen Browne has tallied 374 assists for Coach Ramona Riley-Bozier, who is in her 18th season at her alma mater.
Morgan State earned a four-game victory in last year's meeting between the Greyhounds and the Lady Bears. Corb led the Greyhounds with 16 kills and 12 digs while Katie Sindelar added 17 digs in a losing effort. Johnson and Korinne Lewis each registered 14 kills while Johnson also added 19 digs.
Tonight's match starts a brief two-match homestand for the Greyhounds. Loyola will host local rival Towson University on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. in the 55th meeting between the two teams. Towson has won the last six meetings, including last year's three-game sweep at the Towson Center. Loyola's last victory in the series came on October 9, 1996 in a five-game marathon at Reitz Arena.
