Sept. 12, 2005

BALTIMORE, Md. - Looking to snap a three-match losing streak, the Greyhound volleyball team returns home to Reitz Arena on Tuesday night to face the Howard University Bison in just the second home match of the season for Loyola. The Greyhounds are in the midst of playing 13 of their first 15 matches on the road to open the season, including three tournaments.

Now 1-7 on the season, the Greyhounds lost three matches in the Cal Poly/Best Western Royal Oak Invitational this past weekend. Loyola lost three-game sweeps to the host Mustangs in addition to San Jose State and the University of Portland. It was the first time the Greyhounds had ever faced any of the three other teams in the tournament.

Freshman middle blocker Rachel Schillinger was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Cal Poly Invitational after recording 15 kills in the three matches. Against San Jose State on Friday afternoon, she recorded 10 kills and a .625 hitting percentage to lead the Greyhounds. She ranks third on the team with 47 kills in 26 games this season.

Senior Becky Corb is the team's offensive leader so far this year. She has 81 kills in 26 games played to go with 43 digs. Entering Tuesday's match, she ranks third on the school's all-time kills list with 1,270. She needs 51 kills to take over second place on the list.

Corb is expected to play in her 100th career match against the Bison. Meanwhile, senior setter Krystal Biegaj has played in 95 career matches and is on pace to reach the century mark during this weekend's tournament at UNC-Charlotte.

Biegaj enters this week's action needing 12 assists to reach 3,000 for her career. In 18 games played so far this season, Biegaj has 36 assists, including a season-high 11 assists in the Greyhounds' September 2 loss to Seton Hall at the George Mason University Patriot Invitational.

The Greyhounds' lone win so far this season came against Coppin State last Tuesday night at Reitz Arena in a three-game sweep. The win marked the first time Loyola has swept an opponent at home since October 22, 2001 when the Greyhounds defeated Howard.

Howard enters Tuesday's match with an 0-5 record after suffering three losses at the Mizuno Wildcat Classic at Davidson College over the weekend. Junior setter Shannon Grant was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging just over 24 assists per match. Junior outside hitter Kimberly Dexter leads the Bison with 61 kills on the season, while Grant averages 6.78 assists per game.

Howard Coach Linda Spencer is in her 19th season with the Bison. A 1981 graduate of Howard, Spencer has led the Bison to four Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference titles during her career.

The Bison are currently on a seven-match road trip, which will conclude this weekend at the South Carolina State SpikeFest.

After Tuesday's match, the Greyhounds begin a six-match road trip this weekend when they travel to the Charlotte SpringHill Suites Classic. Loyola will take on the host 49ers in addition to North Texas, Winthrop and Davidson. It will be the third straight weekend Loyola has played in a tournament.

The Greyhounds will also travel to LaSalle and Robert Morris during the road trip before returning to face Morgan State on September 29 at Reitz Arena.
