BALTIMORE - Senior outside hitters Elena Frac and Faye Lukas have been named captains of the 2013 Loyola University Maryland volleyball team, Head Coach Jake Lawrence announced on the eve of the Greyhounds' season opener.
"I'm excited to have Faye and Elena serve as our team captains this season," said Lawrence. "They've shown a great commitment to our vision here at Loyola and have earned the respect of their teammates. I believe each will set an outstanding example for our team and Loyola University Maryland."
Frac has twice been named the Greyhounds' Most Dedicated Player since joining the program for the 2011 season after playing as a freshman at North Carolina State University. The Cary, N.C., native has played in 40 matches for Loyola as an outside hitter and defensive player.
Over the course of her time at Loyola, Frac has posted 60 kills, 41 service aces and 199 digs. She set career-highs in three categories against Morgan State in 2011, tallying nine kills, six aces and 21 digs.
Lukas has started on the outside for the Greyhounds each of the last two years and led the team in kills (390) and kills per set (3.61) as a junior in 2012. During her three years at Loyola, the Stockertown, Pa., native has averaged 2.67 kills and 1.26 digs per set in 78 matches, 51 starts.
Last year, she was third in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, Loyola's former league, in kills and kills per game, and she recorded 10 or more kills in 20 of 28 matches. She set a career-high with 29 kills last year against Manhattan College, a week after posting 28 in a match versus Iona College.
Frac, Lukas and the Greyhounds open the 2013 season on Friday in the Appalachian State Invitational. Loyola faces the host Mountaineers at 7 p.m. before playing Norfolk State University and Sam Houston State University on Saturday in the event's second day.
