BALTIMORE - Junior Jac Bullock and sophomores Lauren Andersen and Tina Catanach were named tri-captains of the 2012 Loyola University Maryland volleyball team, Head Coach Jake Lawrence announced today.
The trio will lead the Greyhounds onto the court Friday when they open their season against Central Connecticut at 4:30 p.m. in Morgantown, W.Va., at West Virginia's Mountaineer Classic.
"Jac, Tina and Lauren have stepped up as leaders in the ways they lead us on and off the court," Lawrence said. "They have done a very good job in practices and outside of the gym, showing what we want Loyola volleyball players to be."
Bullock was named the team's Most Valuable Player a year ago after finishing second on the team in kills, blocks and blocks per set and fourth in aces. She posted a career-high 21 kills in the second Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match of the season, against Marist, hitting .459 against the Red Foxes.
Andersen was the only player to start ever match in 2011 and posted 978 assists as the team's setter. She averaged 8.73 assists per set and also chipped in with 191 digs, 1.71 per set. Andersen had a career-high 57 assists in the MAAC opener against Siena, and she then logged 43 assists, four kills and four blocks assists versus Rider later in the year.
Catanach was the team's primary hitter from the outside as a freshman last season. Starting all but one match, she put away 304 kills, an average of 2.71 per set in her first collegiate season. In addition to leading the team in those categories, she was second in digs, 231, and digs per set, 2.06.
Loyola will play three matches this weekend in Morgantown. Following Friday night's match, the Greyhounds will take on St. Francis (Pa.) at 11 a.m. and the host Mountaineers at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
