BALTIMORE - The Loyola University Maryland volleyball team will host the Marriott Greyhound Challenge on September 7-8, part of the program's home schedule that features 11 matches in Reitz Arena.
Loyola will host Rider, Charleston Southern and Morgan State in the Marriott Greyhound Challenge, a four-team, one-court format. Play in the tournament begins the afternoon of Friday, September 7, with a match between Morgan State and Charleston Southern, and the Greyhounds host Rider that evening in a match that will be played as a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference contest.
The following day sees four matches in Reitz with Loyola kicking off the morning against Charleston Southern and closing the event with an evening match versus Morgan State.
"I'm excited about our schedule this year as our team is a year older and a year more experienced," Head Coach Jake Lawrence said. "Getting a match in early against West Virginia, a quality Big XII opponent, will be a good test for our team and set the stage for a successful season. The expectation at Loyola is that we compete for conference championships, and I believe this schedule allows us to grow and come together in time for a tough MAAC season.
"The Marriott Greyhound Challenge is really shaping up as an outstanding event. It's an opportunity to get in front of our home fans and really develop a connection with the campus community. Our goal is to make the Challenge a premier annual preseason tournament on the East Coast. Marriott, our title sponsor, has helped us take the first steps towards that goal. Having exciting home events is an important part of building a championship program."
Loyola opens its 2012 schedule with the Mountaineer Invitational at West Virginia. The Greyhounds will face Central Connecticut to open the season on Friday, August 24, and they then face St. Francis (Pa.) and the host Mountaineers on Saturday.
A midweek match, the Greyhounds' only non-conference tilt outside of tournament action, is next on the slate. Loyola will make the short trek to Towson for a contest on Tuesday, August 28.
The Greyhounds will participate in the Duquesne/Robert Morris Invitational in Pittsburgh. Loyola will play Bucknell and Norfolk State on Friday, August 31, and take on Providence and Duquesne the next day.
After the home tournament, Loyola will take a weekend off to prepare for MAAC competition. A trip to Western New York to face Canisius and Niagara September 22 and 23, respectively, gets league action under way.
The Greyhounds will be at home the next two weekends when they host Iona and Fairfield on September 29 and 30, followed by matches against Saint Peter's and Manhattan on October 6 and 7. The match against Iona on Saturday, September 29, will be part of the school's Family Weekend events, as well.
A five-match road trip will take the team away from Baltimore for the next two weeks, as they play at Manhattan on Wednesday, October 10, followed by three matches in as many days, Saturday through Monday, October 13-15, at Siena, Marist and Saint Peter's. The road trip concludes with a Saturday, October 20 contest at Rider.
The Greyhounds host Niagara and Canisius Saturday-Sunday, October 27-28, before playing their final regular-season road games at Iona and Fairfield, Saturday-Sunday, November 3-4.
Loyola culminates its regular-season slate with a pair of home matches on Saturday-Sunday, November 10-11, versus Marist and Siena.
Fairfield will host the 2012 MAAC Championships with the top four teams in the league qualifying for the event that will be held in Connecticut, Saturday-Sunday, November 17-18.
