BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland's volleyball team will play in four tournaments, including hosting the second-annual Marriott Greyhound Challenge, before commencing its inaugural season in the Patriot League on Friday, September 27, at Lehigh University.
"We are excited for the preseason tournaments, especially the Marriott Greyhound Challenge that we are hosting for the second year in a row," Head Coach Jake Lawrence said. "We will see some tremendous competition early on, particularly from Arizona and UC Santa Barbara, two schools that are historically some of the best in the country. Our out-of-conference schedule is going to prepare us for the Patriot League, a conference that is going to be a great challenge for us."
The Greyhounds, who saw a five-win improvements in 2012 over 2011 by finishing with a 13-15 record, open their 2013 campaign at the Appalachian State Invitational in Boone, N.C., on Friday, August 30.
There, Loyola will face the host Mountaineers in its opening match prior to playing Norfolk State University and Sam Houston State University on Saturday, August 31.
The following weekend, the Greyhounds host the Marriott Greyhound Challenge featuring competition from the University of Delaware, La Salle University and UMBC. Loyola won the first-annual event last year and will play La Salle on Friday, September 6, before facing Delaware and UMBC on Saturday, September 7.
Loyola ventures across Baltimore for the Maddie Bingman Memorial Tournament at UMBC on Friday, September 13, and Saturday, September 14. The Greyhounds play Howard University and Coppin State University on Friday and NJIT on Saturday.
While the contests at UMBC will be a short trip for the Greyhounds, they will make their longest trek of the season the next weekend when they travel to the Old Pueblo, Tucson, Ariz., for the University of Arizona's Wildcat Classic. Loyola takes on the host Wildcats on Friday, September 20, and then sees action against UC Santa Barbara and Wofford College on Saturday, September 21, in the storied McKale Center.
The match against Wofford concludes non-conference action for the Greyhounds who step into Patriot League action against Lehigh on Friday, September 27, and then take on Lafayette College the following day.
A match in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, October 2, at American University will take place before the Greyhounds host the U.S. Military Academy in the first Patriot League match at Reitz Arena on Friday, October 4. College of the Holy Cross visits Loyola the next day.
Matches at Bucknell University and Colgate University on Friday and Saturday, October 11 and 12, are on the docket before a Wednesday, October 16, contest at home versus the U.S. Naval Academy.
Loyola has a nine-day break before hosting American on Friday, October 25. The Greyhounds then make the short trip to Annapolis, Md., for a Tuesday, October 29, contest at Navy.
Contests at home versus Lafayette and Lehigh on Friday and Saturday, November 1 and 2, are next before the final regular-season road trip of 2013, Friday and Saturday, November 8 and 9, at Holy Cross and Army.
Loyola wraps up its home regular-season slate against Colgate on Friday, November 15, before hosting Bucknell for Senior Day on Saturday, November 16.
The Patriot League Championships will be held ¬- with the top four teams in the league standings advancing to the tournament - Friday and Saturday, November 22 and 23, at the site of the regular-season champion.
