BALTIMORE - The U.S. Naval Academy used a 10-2 run in the first set to take control of the match, and the Midshipmen defeated Loyola University Maryland, 25-18, 25-12, 25-22, Friday night in Patriot League action.
Loyola (6-17 overall, 1-7 Patriot League) tied Navy, 8-8, on a Midshipmen service error in the first set, but Gaby Smith tallied one of her match-high 13 kills to sideout for Navy (3-17, 1-6). Loyola committed back-to-back hitting miscues before Haley Puddy had a kill for the Greyhounds.
The teams would trade points again on kills by Molly Cichosz for Loyola and one by Navy’s Dorothy Murray, putting the Midshipmen’s lead at 12-10, but Navy would reel off seven-straight points to take a commanding lead in the set.
Loyola would get to within a point late in the third set, 19-18, but Navy closed out the match with six of the last nine points.
Smith led all players with 13 kills for the Midshipmen, while Murray and Maggie Phillips each had eight.
Puddy posted nine kills to lead Loyola, and Corri Waters had three total blocks.
The Greyhounds have a week off before resuming conference play on Friday, Oct. 23, with a 7 o’clock home match against Lafayette College.
