Baltimore, Md. - Loyola's volleyball team took Game One, but Iona battled back to win the next three games and the match as the Gaels defeated the Greyhounds 3-1 at Reitz Arena on Saturday afternoon in what was both squads' Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opener.
The Greyhounds held a 17-13 lead in Game One when Iona went on a 7-0 run to take a 19-17 advantage. Loyola was not shaken by its opponent's rally. After both teams exchanged points to force a tie at 25 apiece, the 'Hounds finally broke things open as they won five of the game's last seven points to win Game One, 30-27.
However, the Gaels quickly stole Loyola's momentum as they opened Game Two with a 12-6 run and never looked back en route to a 30-22 victory.
Iona maintained this momentum and took Game Three 30-22 and Game Four 30-18 to close out the match and improve to 9-13 overall and 1-0 in the MAAC.
Loyola falls to 5-13 on the year and 0-1 in the MAAC.
The Greyhounds were led by Christina Greenup's 16 kills on a .256 hitting percentage. Junior Becky Corb, who after today's match now needs just six kills to reach 1,000 for her career, was the other Greyhound in double-digit kills as she nailed down 15. Krystal Biegaj dished out 41 assists.
Iona was paced by four players in double-digit kills. Miki Hogg led this Gaels' quartet with 23, Chelsea White recorded 13, Megan Dailey had 12, and Kristin Allain posted 10.
