Army West Point Rides First-Set Hitting To Win In Three Over Volleyball

BALTIMORE - The U.S. Military Academy opened Saturday’s match hitting .647 in the first set and finished hitting at a .358 clip to beat Loyola University Maryland in three, 25-16, 25-18, 25-18.

The Black Knights (11-6 overall, 3-1 Patriot League) had 12 kills and one error in just 17 attempts in the first set, while they limited the Greyhounds (5-13, 0-3) to only eight kills against seven errors.

Army West Point scored five of the match’s fist seven points, but Loyola came back to take a 10-9 lead on an Anna Eckstein service ace. A Haley Puddy kill tied the match at 12-12, but the Black Knights then scored four in a row and 13 of the first set’s final 17 points.

Molly Cichosz led Loyola with nine kills, while Puddy and Stacey Kazalas each had seven. The Greyhounds did have seven blocks led by five from Corri Waters and three by Danielle Hillman.

Nicole Perry had 10 kills to lead Army West Point and was one of four players with five or more kills. Vanessa Edwards had 29 assists to lead all players, while Shannel Chong had 16 digs for Army.

Loyola is back in action Sunday afternoon in Reitz Arena where they will host College of the Holy Cross at 2 p.m.
