NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Three Loyola University Maryland players had nine kills each, but Iona College defeated the Greyhounds, 25-8, 25-19, 22-25, 25-18, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action on Sunday afternoon.
Iona (7-7 overall, 4-2 MAAC) scored the first 10 points of the match, and the Greyhounds had only four kills during the first set.
The second set opened in a closer fashion, as it featured five lead changes and eight ties. Loyola went up 13-12 kills on a Catanach kill, but Iona scored the next two points and after a tie at 14-14, the Gaels scored three in a row and led for the rest of the frame.
Loyola (5-14, 2-4) controlled the tempo of the third set, as they went on a 10-5 run to extend a 6-4 advantage to 16-9. Iona closed to within a point, 22-21, on a Catrina Warren kill, but Bullock responded with a kill to put Loyola badk up by one.
Madisyn Spence put away a kill for an Iona sideout, making it a one-point set, 23-22, again, but Bullock and Catanach closed out the frame in favor of the Greyhounds with a pair of kills.
The teams were within a point of each other when Nicole Sarby had a kill for Loyola to make it 10-9 in the third set, but the Gaels scored five in a row and seven of the next eight points to rally and take control of the deciding set.
Loyola continues MAAC action next weekend when it travels to Lawrenceville, N.J., to face Rider on Saturday at 3 o'clock.
