FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Fairfield University hit .333 and held the Greyhounds to just 22 kills, as the Stags beat Loyola University Maryland, 25-13, 25-22, 25-8, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon.
Fairfield (7-8 overall, 4-1 MAAC) had 39 kills with just 11 errors, led by Haililani Pokipala's nine. Meanwhile, no Greyhound had more than five kills, as Loyola (5-13, 2-3) posted just 22 kills with 19 errors on 94 swings.
The match started evenly as Loyola led, 9-8, on a Faye Lukas first-set kill, but after the score was tied at 10-10 on a Stags' attack error, Fairfield scored the next five points and 15 of the next 18 to close out the set.
The second set was again close, as Jac Bullock's ace made it 10-9, and a Pokipala hitting miscue tied it a point later.
Fairfield again had a run, scoring seven of 10 points to go up 17-13, and the Stags eventually won the frame, 25-22.
Loyola is back in action Sunday afternoon when it plays at Iona College in a 2 o'clock match.
