Volleyball Sweeps Morgan State For Third Home Win Of Season

BALTIMORE, Md. - Senior outside hitter Becky Corb recorded a team-high nine kills to go with 11 digs as the Greyhound volleyball team (4-12) improved to 3-0 at home this season with a three-game sweep over Morgan State University (4-13) in a non-conference volleyball match at Reitz Arena on Tuesday evening.

The Greyhounds, who have won four straight home matches dating back to last season, earned the sweep with scores of 30-27, 30-22 and 30-16. With the loss, Morgan State has lost three of its last four matches.

Loyola overcame a poor hitting performance by taking advantage of 23 Morgan State errors in the match, including nine in the second and third games. The Greyhounds were able to overcome 10 errors of their own in the opening game to take the three-point victory. Freshman Rachel Schillinger recorded five of Loyola's 13 kills in the game while senior libero Jamie Arndt had five digs. Sophomore Esther Johnson had seven of her match-high 12 kills in the opening game to lead the Lady Bears.

In the second game, the Greyhounds rallied from a 7-5 deficit by scoring the next five points for a 10-7 advantage they did not relinquish, which included three Morgan State errors. Loyola used a 12-kill effort, including four by sophomore Christina Greenup to earn the 30-22 victory. Junior middle hitter O'Tasha Williams had four kills for Morgan State in the second game as the Lady Bears hit just .027 in the game.

The Greyhounds used a 12-point run in the third game to break away from an 18-16 advantage and earn the sweep. Loyola needed to record just four kills in the match-clinching rally and took advantage of seven Morgan State errors. Corb secured the win for the Greyhounds by recording the match's final kill off an assist from freshman setter Marcellee Williams .

With her nine kills in the match, Corb moved to within 39 kills of the Loyola College career record, which is held by Sarah Becker, '94. Her streak of consecutive matches with double-digit kills was snapped at eight straight matches. Arndt finished the match with a team-high 16 digs while Williams added 24 assists.

Johnson led the Lady Bears with a match-high 12 kills while sophomore libero Ashley Preston led all players with 17 digs. Sophomore Mandisa Richardson also contributed 11 digs in the loss for the Lady Bears.

The Greyhounds continue their brief two-match homestand on Tuesday night when they host local rival Towson University in the 55th all-time meeting between the two teams. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at Reitz Arena. Morgan State returns to action on Tuesday night with a road match at the University of Maryland - Eastern Shore.
