BALTIMORE - Lafayette College pulled away at the end of each set in an otherwise tight contest, defeating Loyola University Maryland, 25-18, 25-23, 25-20, on Saturday in Patriot League action.
Loyola (5-12 overall, 0-2 Patriot League) used an 8-0 run in the second set to pull within a point, 21-20, as Molly Cichosz had four of her team-high 11 kills during the stretch. The Leopards, however, got kills from Jet Manzi and Brianne Giangiobbe to stretch its advantage back to three.
A Manzi hitting miscue closed the gap to two, but Giangiobbe responded with a kill for Lafayette (10-4, 2-1). Haley Puddy then had back-to-back kills for the Greyhounds, drawing Loyola within a point, 24-23, but a service error by the Greyhounds closed the set in favor of Lafayette.
The third set featured 12 tie scores and nine lead changes with the last tie coming at 19-19. Lafayette then reeled off four points in a row to force a Greyhounds’ timeout at 23-19.
Stacey Kazalas had a kill for Loyola to pull her team’s deficit back to three, but the Leopards scored the match’s final two points to close the win.
Cichosz had a team-high 11 kills, while Puddy and Kazalas each had nine. Cichosz and Puddy each had four total blocks for Loyola. Molly Werts had 20 assists and 13 digs, and Micah Duzey posted 19 digs.
Giangiobbe led all players with 12 kills for Lafayette.
The Greyhounds return to Reitz Arena for a pair of Patriot League matches next weekend, hosting the U.S. Military Academy on Saturday and College of the Holy Cross the following day.
