BALTIMORE - Loyola College won its seventh match out of eight Wednesday night, defeating visiting Wagner College, 30-28, 30-26, 30-24, in a non-conference match at Reitz Arena.
Loyola (11-7) took a 12-6 lead early in the first game, but the Seahawks (2-7) battled back to take a 16-15 lead on a kill by Sarah Garrette.
Wagner went ahead by two, 20-18, on a Alex Klein kill, one of her 10 on the night. Loyola, however, tied the game at 20 on a Rachel Schillinger kill, then took the lead, 22-21, when Wagner Erin Henneberger hit the ball wide for an error.
It was Wagner that would jump out to a lead in the second game, going ahead 9-4 on a string of attack errors by the Greyhounds. The Seahawks, however, lost the serve on an attack error, and Anastasia Collins scored an ace for Loyola, and Karlee Woodward and Camaioni each had kills to pull within one, 9-8.
Although Wagner went back up 10-8, Loyola took control of the match behind the serve of Camaioni and Cruz. In addition to four Wagner attack errors in an eight-point stretch, Cruz had two of her game-high four aces.
Loyola tightened up its block in the deciding third game. The Greyhounds recorded five of their eight blocks in the third. Schillinger led all players with five blocks, while Woodward, Collins and Christina Greenup each had three.
The win was Loyola's 11th of the season, the most by the Greyhounds since the 2002 season. The Greyhounds' 11-7 record equals the best in school history after 18 matches. The 1992 team, which went on to a 25-15 mark, was also 11-7 at this point in the season.
Loyola returns to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action this weekend when it travels to Fairfield University on Saturday, September 29, for a 2 p.m. match. The Greyhounds then play at Iona College on Sunday, September 30 at 2 p.m.
