Buffalo, N.Y. - In a five set competition the Loyola University Maryland women's volleyball team lost to Canisius College, 3-2 (13-25, 20-25, 25-23, 25-19, 15-12), Saturday in Buffalo, N. Y. The Greyhounds will compete tomorrow against Niagara at 1 p.m. in Niagara University, N.Y. The Purple Eagles are coming off a, 3-0, victory over Rider.
The Greyhounds (5-11, 0-3 MAAC) was led by senior Nina Camaioni who recorded a double-double for the match with 22 kills and 10 digs. Camaioni had a .405 hitting percentage for the match.
Sophomore Katie Dircks had a double-double with 11 kills and 13 digs and freshman Nicole Sarby recorded 14 kills for the match hitting a.462.
Sophomore Aubrey Kirven had 49 assists and senior Brittany Born recorded 21 digs. The Greyhounds had 21 total blocking assists for the match. They also recorded seven serving aces to nine serving errors.
The Golden Griffins were led by Layne Adams who recorded 14 kills and Samantha Good who had 13 kills with a .379 hitting percentage.
In the first set it was all Greyhounds. Loyola scored the first two points before Canisius finally scored. The Greyhounds soon went on a few runs. They went on two five point runs before the Golden Griffins would answer back. At 10-4 Canisius would only answer with seven more points as Loyola would answer with eight at 18-11. The Greyhounds went on a seven point run to Canisius one point before Loyola finished the set 25-13. The Greyhounds had a .333 hitting percentage to the Golden Griffin -.062.
In the second set the score was tied at six before Loyola took the lead and never looked back. The closest Canisius came was at 17-15 but would only answer with five more points until the Greyhounds finished the set 25-20. The Greyhounds had a best hitting percentage of the match at .400 to Canisius .216
After intermission in the third set the score was tied at three before Canisius took a five point lead. The score was tied again by a serving ace by Nina Camaioni. The score would soon be tied three more times before Canisius took the lead. Loyola came back and was down by two at 22-24 by a Kill from Nina Camaioni. They came within one with a serving ace from Taylor Koncelik but Canisius Layne Adams finished the set with an assist from Janelle Davis to win 25-23.The hitting percentage for the Greyhounds was .216 to the Golden Griffins .350.
In the fourth set, the score was tied at three before Canisius went up by three points before the Greyhounds answered back. But the Golden Griffins kept that lead and it kept growing until the score was 11-17. The Golden Griffins never looked back and finishing the set 25-19. The closet the Greyhounds came was at 19-23 when Camaioni had a kill by Aubrey Kirven. But that was the closest. The Greyhounds had a hitting percentage of .240 to Canisius .304.
In the fifth and final set, the score was tied at seven before Canisius took the lead and the match. The Greyhounds came within one with a kill by Camaioni off the assists from Kirven. Loyola would only answer with one more point before Canisius won the set 15-12 by a kill from Samantha Good off the assist from Janelle Davis. The Greyhounds hit a .240 to the Golden Griffins .333.
