The Loyola University Maryland volleyball team dropped a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference contest Sunday afternoon at Niagara University, 3-1. The Greyhounds earned a 25-17 victory in the first set, before falling 25-21, 25-19 and 25-17.
Four Greyhounds recorded double-digit kills, led by Mindy Maloney’s 13 and Faye Lukas and Jac Bullock’s 12. Katie Dircks tacked on 10 kills and 15 digs for a double-double, while Lukas also had a double-double with 15 digs.
Defensively, Lauren Anderson had a team-high 21 digs to go with 36 assists.
For Niagara (6-7, 3-1 MAAC), Ellen Senf had 10 kills and Allison Reis had a game-high 24 digs.
The Greyhounds broke open an even 10-10 with a 10-5 run en route to a 25-17 victory.
Loyola and Niagara continued to battle into the second set, with the game again tied at 10, but this time the Purple Eagles broke the stalemate, gaining a two-point advantage, before the Greyhounds strung together seven-straight points to take a 19-15 advantage. Niagara responded to tie the game at 19 before pulling ahead 23-20 and held on for a 25-21 win.
The Purple Eagles dominated the beginning of the third frame, earning a 10-2 and never looked back, as Niagara claimed the third set, 25-19.
In the fourth set, Niagara pulled away 16-4 and maintained its lead for a 25-17 set win.
Loyola will return to action on Friday and Saturday when it hosts Iona and Fairfield, respectively. Game time with the Gaels is set for 7 p.m., while opening serve with the Stags is scheduled for 2 p.m.
