Baltimore, Md. - The Loyola College volleyball team won its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match of the season with a 3-2 victory over Iona Sunday in Reitz Arena. The Greyhounds improve to 3-12 overall and 1-1 in the conference while the Gaels fall to 2-8 overall and 0-2 in the MAAC.
The Greyhounds started out strong, taking game one 30-27. Loyola recorded six aces in game one while Karlee Woodward led the attack with five kills. The Gaels swept games two and three by scores of 30-20 and 30-24. Iona's Megan Dailey recorded 10 kills between game two and three. But the `Hounds fought back, taking game four 30-20 and game five 19-17. Woodward recorded four kills in game four while Blair Snyder was credited with four kills in game five.
Sndyer recorded a game-high 17 kills overall. She was followed by Woodward with 13 and Nicole Scimeme with 12. Setter Chrissey Cruz tallied 46 assists. Snyder also led in digs with 22 while Scimeme and Kimi Gabriel added 19 and 17 respectively. The Greyhounds tallied a total of two solo blocks and 24 block assists with Woodward leading with the two solos and nine block assists.
Dailey led the Gaels attack with 17 kills. Morgan Young was close behind with 16 and Katie Brilla added 12. Setter Beth Holly recorded 55 assists. Alyssa Morales tallied a game-high 25 digs. Shelby Erb added 17 while Darci Woodring and Daily added 12 and 11 respectively. Iona was credited with two solo blocks and just eight block assists with Kristin Allain leading with the two solo blocks and three block assists.
The Greyhounds travel to Towson on Tuesday, September 17. Game time is set for 7:00.
