Final Stats

BALTIMORE - The Greyhounds spoiled cross-town Coppin State's bid for win No. 1 of the season, as they defeated the Eagles 3-0 (26-24, 25-21, 25-19), in non-conference volleyball action Wednesday night at Reitz Arena.

Loyola (5-8) limited the Eagles (0-12) to just .102 hitting for the match, out-killing them 40-25 on .260 hitting. Loyola's Nina Camaioni finished with 18 kills and hit .429 for the match. Katie Dircks added 11 kills on .400 hitting, while Aubrey Kirven tallied 34 assists.

Camaioni started the match with three kills on as many swings to put the first trio of points on the scoreboard in the Greyhounds' 2009 home opener. The Eagles quickly fell behind to 6-1, but rallied after a timeout.

Both teams sided out after the timeout, and Coppin went on to take eight straight points to put the score at 7-8. The Eagles put the pressure on and Loyola responded with seven errors. Just ten of Loyola's 40 kills came in the first set, and the Greyhounds hit just .097.

In the second set, Coppin kept the pressure on but failed to catch up. Loyola was able to capitalize on Coppin's costly errors. Nine of the Greyhounds' 25 points in game two came off their opponents' errors. Once again, the Eagles managed another short rally but Camaioni and Dircks pelted them will kills to secure the win.

Loyola's hitting caught fire in the third set. The Greyhounds picked up the attack and notched 18 kills on a blistering .438 hitting clip in game three. The whole front row heated up, as Dircks, Kirven, Janet Pressler, and Taylor Koncelik all got into the scoring action. Seven of Dircks' 11 kills came in the third set.

One last kill by Camaioni put the match away for Loyola, and effectively secured the sweep.

Next up for Loyola is Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action. The Greyhounds open the 2009 MAAC season Saturday, September 19, when they travel to Loudonville, N.Y., to face defending league champion Siena at 2 p.m. Loyola then plays at Marist on Sunday, September 20, in a 2 p.m. match in Poughkeepsie.
