BALTIMORE - Loyola went on a 9-0 run midway through game two and never looked back as the Greyhounds defeated Howard 3-1 Tuesday night to earn their first win of the season before an always-spirited Reitz Arena crowd.
After falling in game one 30-25, Loyola used that 9-0 run in game two to take control 17-10 en route to a key 30-25 victory in the second stanza. The Greyhounds capitalized on their new-found momentum in game three and handled Howard 30-23. Loyola needed a small comeback in game four to hold off one last Lady Bison push and clinch the match with a 31-29 win.
Greyhound freshman Susanna Leffers recorded a match-high 20 kills, while Becky Corb (18), Christine Lopez (12) and Meghan McCarney (11) also reached double-figures in kills. Senior Katie Pruitt, who played one of the best matches of her collegiate career, posted seven kills and ran down 11 digs.
Loyola improves to 1-11 with the win while Howard falls to 3-5 overall.
The Greyhounds return to action this weekend when they head to the American University Tournament to face some more of the nation's toughest competition as they have been doing throughout the 2003 season's first-half.
