VILLANOVA, Pa. - Loyola University Maryland pushed undefeated Texas Christian University to a fifth set in the first match of the Villanova Classic on Friday evening, but the Horned Frogs pulled out the win in the final set for a 25-12, 28-30, 25-9, 26-28, 15-5 victory.
The Greyhounds (3-6 overall) played their best statistical set in the back-and-forth fourth frame. Loyola hit .239 with 17 kills in a set that featured 18 ties and seven lead changes.
Neither team led by more than three points in the fourth, a margin TCU (7-0) captured at 21-18 before Loyola reeled off three-straight points to tie the score at 21-21. The Horned Frogs earned a point on sideout after a timeout, but Lauren Arnold and Faye Lukas had kills on back-to-back points, pushing Loyola ahead, 23-22.
The teams traded three points to draw to a 24-24 tie before Jac Bullock gave the Greyhounds set point with a kill to make it 25-24.
TCU, however, tied it up again, blocking Bullock's next swing, and the Horned Frogs reached set point after a Loyola attack error.
Bullock, however, came through with another kill to tie the score at 26-26, and Tina Catanach served an ace before TCU's Jordan Raines hit an attempt wide to give Loyola a 28-26 set victory.
The Horned Frogs controlled the deciding fifth set from the outset, scoring four of the first five, and six of the first nine points. An Arnold kill pulled the Greyhounds within two, 6-4, but TCU scored five in a row to go up 11-4.
Arnold saw her first extended playing time of the season and cashed in on it for Loyola, recording a season-high 13 kills. Catanach chipped in with 10 kills and 10 digs, while Janet Pressler had 20 digs.
Four TCU players had 10 or more kills, led by Sloane Sunstrum's 22.
The Greyhounds return to Nevin Field House on Saturday afternoon to face host Villanova at 1 o'clock. They follow that match with a 5 o'clock contest against Colgate.
