Volleyball Wins Two at Battle Of Baltimore

Catonsville, Md. - The Loyola University Maryland volleyball team beat Morgan State, 3-1 (25-14, 23-25, 25-14, 25-15), and host UMBC, 3-0 (25-20, 27-25, 25-23), on the first day of play at the Battle of Baltimore. The Greyhounds will wrap up the tournament on Saturday at Morgan State, playing Coppin State at 1:30 p.m. and Towson at 4:00 p.m.

"We feel very good about where we are in the tournament," head coach Scott Pennewill said. "We also recognize that there are a lot of things that we need to improve upon to make some of these close two-point wins a little bit more decisive. The good news is the competitiveness on this team always is constant."

Against UMBC, senior Nina Camaioni recorded 15 kills with a .314 hitting percentage; she also had nine digs. Sophomore Katie Dircks had 13 kills and seven digs. The best hitting for the team came in the second set with a .341 mark.

In the second set, the Greyhounds had the lead, 18-13, but UMBC started to come back. The set was soon tied at 22-22, but Loyola went up by two. The Retrievers started to come back and tied up the score again, this time at 25-25. The Greyhounds took the lead with a kill by sophomore Aubrey Kirven and won the set with a kill from Dircks.

Against Morgan State, Dircks recorded 13 kills and 10 digs for a double-double, while Camaioni had 12 kills and four digs. Kirven recorded 38 assist for the match. The team had 16 kills in the first set hitting a .414.

Morgan State's Erin Cox had 13 kills against the Greyhounds.

In the first set, Loyola was tied with Morgan State, 4-4, before the Greyhounds took a nine point lead. Morgan State, however, scored another point, but Loyola went on a five-point run ,and the Bears scored just nine more points for the rest of the set, which the Greyhounds won, 25-14.

The second set was close the entire way before Morgan State went on a eight-point run to take the lead, 22-18. Loyola answered back with on three points of its own, but the Bears closed out the set, 25-23.

In the third set, the Greyhounds took a 14-10 lead before going on a six-point run to go ahead, 20-11. Morgan State scored only three more points in that set, which Loyola took, 25-14.

In the fourth and final set of the match, Loyola took a 10-8 lead before going on a five-point advantage. The Bears got another two points and then went on a five point run of their own. After that Morgan State only scored more points, and Loyola won the final set, 25-15.
