TOWSON, Md. - Freshman outside hitter Tina Catanach had a career-best 18 kills and hit .279, as the Loyola University Maryland volleyball team defeated Morgan State University, 21-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-11, to open play in the Battle of Baltimore at Towson University.

UMBC then defeated the Greyhounds (2-3 overall) in the evening match. 

Although the Greyhounds took an 8-2 lead early in the first set, Morgan State (2-2) rallied to tie it at 18-18 on a Loyola attacking error. The Greyhounds were unable to pull in front again, and the Bears closed out the set, 25-21.

Loyola, however, showed steady improvement on both ends of the floor. A solid defensive effort in the second set held Morgan State to a -.083 hitting percentage, and the Greyhoudns were able to sideout 63-percent of the time. The Bears built a modest 11-8 lead, but Loyola rallied to win, scoring the last six points of the frame.

The Greyhounds had their best hitting performance of the match in set three, putting away 15 kills with just one error in 29 third-set attempts. Loyola led from the 6-5 point in the match and continued to gradually extend its lead en route to a 25-18 victory.

Loyola controlled the tempo of the deciding fourth set from the start, going up 11-0. Elena Frac served 10-straight points to start, and Meghan Lowry served seven in a row later in the match.

In addition to Catanach's 18 kills, Frac had nine and career bests of six service aces and 21 digs. Lauren Andersen spread out 37 assists, and Lowry had five service aces.

Loyola held only one lead, on the first point of the match, against UMBC, and the Retrievers won, 25-16, 25-18, 25-10. The Greyhounds hit just .111 in the match, while UMBC hit at a .321 clip.

Catanach had seven kills, and Mindy Maloney had six from the middle.

Loyola resumes action in the tournament on Saturday when it plays Coppin State at 1:30 p.m. on the campus of Morgan State University. The Greyhounds then play Towson at 7 p.m., also at Morgan State.
