BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University trailed in just one set, and the Mountaineers outhit Loyola University Maryland, .323-.019, as the Mountaineers defeated the Greyhounds, 25-15, 25-14, 25-20, in the season-opener for both teams on day one of the Appalachian State Invitational.
Loyola (0-1 overall) led twice in the third set, by no more than one point, and forced eight ties, but Appalachian State (1-0) eventually built a multi-point lead to close out the match.
Lindsey Sauls and Jess Keller both had nine kills to lead the Mountaineers. Sauls hit a match-best .474, logging her nine kills on 19 swings without an error. Emily Corrigan posted eight kills for Appalachian State with just one error.
The Greyhounds return to action on Saturday at 10 a.m. when the face Norfolk State University, a four-set winner over Sam Houston State University on Friday afternoon. Loyola then faces Sam Houston State on Saturday at 4 p.m.
