PITTSBURGH - Katie Dircks registered a season-high 12 kills, and Jac Bullock added 10, as the Loyola University Maryland volleyball team defeated Norfolk State University, 25-23, 25-14, 25-22, in the first match of the Duquesne/Robert Morris Invitational.
Janet Pressler and Kara Schiffer each had 12 digs for the Greyhounds, and Lauren Andersen dished out 31 assists. Faye Lukas connected for eight kills, and Lauren Arnold added six. Mindy Maloney had four kills and three blocks.
Loyola (3-2) scored the first six points of the match and maintained a six-point advantage at 13-7, but the Spartans (1-3) would close the gap to two, 19-17 before a Simone Reid kill pushed the Greyhounds back up three.
Norfolk State would twice get it back to two after that, and an Adriana Ramos kill made it 24-23 Loyola with a kill before Loyola closed out the set.
The Greyhounds again did not trail in the second set and were down by just one point, 3-2, in the third set, as they closed out the victory.
Loyola will play Providence College at 4 p.m.
