Senior Melanie Mitchell will throw in the Javelin competition at the 2009 NCAA East Regionals on Saturday in Greensboro, N.C.
She is the first Greyhound to qualify for a NCAA field event, and the second in school history to travel to Regionals.
"It's a tremendous accomplishment for the school, and for our program," Head Coach Jackie Truncellito said.
Mitchell grabbed this spot after winning the 2009 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title several weeks ago. She threw 38.08 meters on her second throw to grab the conference win and an automatic bid to the regional meet. Her mark also set a new school record.
"She is constantly stretched so thin at meets - covering nearly all field events for the Greyhounds," Truncellito said. "For everything to come together on the right day is truly admirable - but that's Mel - she thrives under pressure."
Mitchell normally trains to compete in up to seven or eight events at each meet, but she will focus solely on the Javelin at this weekend's NCAA event.
The senior is set to compete at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at North Carolina A&T State University. Field events will take place on the Irwin Belk Track and Field Facility.
