CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Loyola University Maryland outdoor track and field senior Marissa Buccellato was named to the Patriot League All-Academic Team, as announced by the league office Monday. Buccellato was one of 10 female student-athletes to be honored by the Patriot League for their work in the classroom and on the track.
A member of both of Loyola’s sprint-relay teams that earned points at the Patriot League Championships, Buccellato holds the program record in the outdoor 4x400 with a time of 3:59.96.
This season, the senior sprinter set a personal record in the 200m at the Colonial Relays, recording a time of 27.30. She also placed among the top-three in three separate events this outdoor season, all teaming up with her strong relay teammates.
A biology major, Buccellato carries a 3.98 grade-point average and was one of four seniors to be named to the all-academic team: American’s Julia Sullivan, Bucknell’s Emily Waksmunski and Lafayette’s Rachel Pena were the others. They were joined by Lindsay Gabow (Army), Allison Barwise (Boston U.), Nikko Brady (Boston U.), Michelle Sumner (Boston U.), Sarah Dahlstrom (Holy Cross) and Emily Jensen (Navy) on the all-academic team.
Barwise was named the Patriot League’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
To be eligible for the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete with sophomore, junior or senior standing must carry at least a 3.2 GPA. Nominees are taken from each Patriot League institution and winners are determined by voting. Additional student-athletes will be honored next month on the league’s Academic Honor Roll.
