The Loyola University Maryland women’s track & field team heads to Lawrenceville, N.J., this weekend to take part in the 2012 MAAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Rider University on Saturday and Sunday, May 5-6.
The Greyhounds are looking to improve upon their fifth-place finish from 2011. Last year at the championships, the Loyola set several records, including the 4x400-meter relay team that included current Greyhounds in Marissa Buccellato, Jacqueline Porter and Kristina Krupa who finished fourth in 4:05.64.
Westley is the school-record holder in the 100 hurdles, and has a season best time of 15.51 that she set at the Colonial Relays. The senior finished sixth in the event a year ago.
Another school record holder in Porter will highlight Loyola in the 400 hurdles, registering a time of 1:07.30 earlier this season.
Krupa was the top 400 runner at last year’s MAAC Championships, finishing 11th in 1:00.70. Junior Jackie D’Antonio has the best time in the even this year for Loyola, notching a time of 59.89 at the Loyola/Hopkins Invite.
Freshman Charlotte Criqui makes her first appearance in the championships this year and has the best mark for Loyola in the 100-meter dash this season at 13.66.
Jackie D’Antonio also set a school record last year, finishing seventh in the 800 in a time of 2:20.13. Recently named MVP of the outdoor track team, D’Antonio broke the 60-second mark in the 400 earlier this season, finishing fourth in the event at the Loyola/Hopkins Invitational.
The distance events have always been a strength for the Greyhounds, and they expect nothing different from this year’s group.
The distance runners boast a lot of experience, and scored valuable points at least year’s conference championship. Senior Stephanie Gibney took down third in the 5,000 last year, and owns the best time this season for Loyola at 18:05.89.
Gabrielle Cocco had one of the more impressive individual races this season, finishing 14th in the Penn Relays in the 3,000 while recording a school-record and ECAC-qualifying time of 9:49.03. The sophomore has also run strong in the 1,500 this year.
Courtney Willeford had a third-place finish in the javelin with a mark of 34.72. Willeford has been the top Greyhound in the event this year, with her best performance coming in the heptathlon at the Penn Relays.
Freshman Alessandra Piscitelli has shown steady improvement throughout the year and will be the top Greyhound to watch in the shot put, discus and hammer throw events.
Freshman Jenna Smith will lead the Greyhounds in horizontal jumps, holding the season-best times for Loyola in both the long jump (4.66m) and triple jump (10.10) this year. Marci Baileys and Claire Okrongly also will add a veteran presence to those two events.
Maria Hacker will continue her work at the pole vault. The freshman was thrown into the event with no prior experience before the MAAC Indoor Championships, and has continued her work throughout the spring season.
The action starts on Saturday in Lawrenceville, N.J., and finishes on Sunday.
