Baltimore, Md. - Five Loyola runners qualified for the upcoming Penn Relays which will take place April 21-25 at Franklin Field on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. This event is one of the largest track and field relay event and attracts some of the best competitors in the country.
"These athletes are definitely among the elite," Track and Field Head Coach Jackie Truncellito said. "You need to put up some pretty impressive performances to be eligible to compete."
Three men's cross-country runners qualified to run in the 5,000 Meter Run to take place on Thursday including seniors Gian Caccia and Chris Heibell and junior Dan McDevitt.
Senior Maureen Wynne will represent the Loyola women in the 10,000 Meter Run on Thursday evening.
Fellow teammate and senior Melanie Mitchell qualified for the Heptathlon and will compete in events on Tuesday and Wednesday. She will start with Hurdles, High Jump, Shot Put and 200 Meter Run on Tuesday and will finish with the Javelin Throw, Long Jump and 800 Meter Run on Wednesday.
Mitchell earned the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Performer of the Week honors for the week of April 13 after her performance at the Baltimore Metro Invite. She threw 32.35 in the Javelin and had a 5.19 meter jump in the Long Jump competition to grab wins in both events. She also scored a second-place finish in the Shot Put with a 10.18 meter mark.
