Greyhounds To Host First Meet At New Johns Hopkins/Loyola College Track And Field Complex

April 7, 2009

Baltimore, Md. - The Greyhound's women's track and field team will host their first-ever meet at the new Johns Hopkins University/Loyola College Track and Field Complex on Wednesday, April 8.

Loyola and Johns Hopkins came together to host the quad meet and invited Goucher and Towson to complete the field.

Prior to the start of the meet, the Greyhounds and the Blue Jays will celebrate the construction of their first full-size competition facility with a short ribbon-cutting ceremony at 2:00 p.m.

Loyola Head Coach Jackie Truncellito is thrilled to finally have a place to call home and is excited to give her student-athletes a more complete experience.

"It gives the athletes confidence knowing they are supported, and recognized for their efforts. When you are out on the track during practice - it feels like an actual Track and Field team - with hurdlers doing drills on the straights, jumpers doing run throughs on the far side, sprinters coming out of the blocks, and distance runners running circles around it all."

The new track is located just minutes from both campuses and sits directly behind the old Eastern High School building at Johns Hopkins' Eastern Campus.

Modeled after Duke University's track at Wallace Wade Stadium, this comprehensive facility includes a nine-lane, 400-meter oval track, an area for the Steeplechase event, and a field in the center for throwing competiton.

The project started back in the fall of 2007 when Loyola Athletic Director Joe Boylan approached Hopkins Athletic Director Tom Calder with the idea to create an outdoor track and field facility to promote both schools' programs. Construction started in late May of 2008, after months of meetings between administrators and staff at both schools.

The inaugural meet will commence at 2:30 p.m. with the Javelin Throw.
