Track and Field Opens Season With Strong Effort At Bison Opener

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Competing in their first college meets, freshmen Melanie Mitchell and Kelly Wolf both set school records as the Greyhound women's track and field team opened the 2005-2006 season with a strong effort at the Bison Opener held at Bucknell University on Saturday afternoon.

Mitchell and Wolf were among three Loyola athletes who set school records during the competition as junior Jaime Humphrey also added a school mark in the meet.

Mitchell set her school record in the high jump, recording a height of 1.45 meters. Meanwhile, Wolf secured a new Loyola mark in the 400 meter run by registering a time of 1:03.39, which was good for 14th place. She also earned 14th place in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:35.71.

Humphrey finished the record-setting performances by turning in a time of :29.39 in the 200 meter dash.

Junior Michelle McVann finished in 10th place in the one mile run with a time of 5:36.63 while Bethany Gentry earned a time of 6:02.46.

"I was happy with the results of our first outing," Loyola Coach Julie Culley said. "We have a lot of work to do, but this is a great way to start the season."

The Greyhounds are idle until January 14 when they travel to Annapolis, Md. for the Navy Invitational.
