April 23, 2016

BALTIMORE - Freshman Molly Smith broke her own school record in the 400m, as the Loyola University Maryland women’s track team competed at the Morgan State Legacy Meet Saturday afternoon at the Bears’ Hughes Stadium.

Smith finished the 400m in 58.54, topping her previous school record by nearly one second (59.43), which she set Friday, April 8, at the Towson Invitational.

Later in the afternoon, Smith, along with classmate Devon Terwilliger, junior Jessa Laspesa and sophomore Emma Dunleavy all combined for a ninth-place finish in the 4x400m relay. The Greyhounds came across the finish line ahead of relay teams from Towson and American and clocked a time of 4:00.10.

Laspesa also ran a leg of the 4x100m relay with freshman Erin Gamble, junior Claire Scavone and freshman Olivia Airhart. Loyola finished 12th in 51.09.

Additionally, seven Greyhounds set new personal bests at Saturday’s meet.

Senior Brianna Nelson ran the 400m in 1:01.41, while freshman hurdler Christa Sidoti shaved nearly a second off her personal record in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:08.27.

Despite not advancing past the 100m prelims, a trio of sprinters - Airhart (13.25) and sophomores Daniella Joyce (13.10) and Delia Oldak (14.14) – ran a PR in the event.

Freshmen mid-distance runners MaryEllen Woods and Gabrielle Silvestri also set new PRs in the 800m. Woods came across the finish line in 2:19.52, while Silvestri clocked a time of 2:32.97.

Junior Sarah Askine and Loyola’s 4x400m relay team will travel to Philadelphia Thursday night for the Penn Relays, while the remainder of the Greyhounds’ squad heads to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, for the Lehigh Games on Saturday, April 30.
