TOWSON, Md. - Freshman Molly Smith broke the school record in the 400m dash to guide the Loyola University Maryland women's track team to a sixth-place finish at the Towson Invitational Friday afternoon at the Tigers' Johnny Unitas Stadium.
Loyola collected 42 team points, finishing ahead of Coppin State (28 points), CCBC Essex (10) and Morgan State (5). Host Towson took first with 299 points, while Patriot League foe Navy came in second with 182 points.
Smith topped Paige Thomas' previous 400m-school record of 59.51, set back in 2007. The freshman took second overall and tallied eight team points with a time of 59.43. Sophomore Emma Dunleavy came in third, behind Smith, with a time of 1:00.15, while senior Brianna Nelson also contributed team points with a seventh-place finish (1:02.99). Juniors Claire Scavone (ninth, 1:03.59), Isabela Ugarte (10th, 1:04.33) and Sarah Askine (11th, 1:04.43), as well as freshman Gabrielle Silvestri (13th, 1:05.33) also competed in the 400m dash.
Smith and Dunleavy went on to take fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 200m dash. Smith crossed the finish line in 26.85, while Dunleavy came in at 27.04. Freshman Olivia Airhart finished just outside scoring range, taking ninth in 27.52, while sophomore Daniella Joyce (11th, 28.17), senior Rebekah Rogerson (12th, 28.55), Ugarte (13th, 28.69) and Delia Oldak (14th, 29.50) also ran in the event.
Freshman Devon Terwilliger led Loyola in the 400m hurdles, finishing fourth (1:06.58) and contributing five team points. Classmates Christa Sidoti took ninth in 1:09.61 in the same race, while Erin Gamble finished right outside the top 10 with a time of 1:11.55.
In the 1,500m, senior Erica Canas finished among the top eight in scoring position, taking seventh with a time of 5:01.69. Freshmen Christina Daniels (ninth, 5:09.02) and Courtney Wallace (10th, 5:13.48) and junior Caitlyn McGuinness (13th, 5:31.99) also competed in the event.
Freshman Mary Sutton made her debut in the 3,000m steeplechase and contributed two team points with a seventh-place finish (12:01.41), while off the track classmate Anne Lauder tallied four team points, taking fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 10.37m.
The 4x400m relay squad of Terwilliger, Scavone, freshman MaryEllen Woods and Nelson closed out the day's events taking fourth with a time of 4:06.62.
The Greyhounds return to action Saturday, April 16, hosting the Loyola/Hopkins Invitational on the track between the Evergreen and Homewood campuses.
