STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Junior Sarah Askine finished runner-up in the mile to lead the Loyola University Maryland women's track team at St. Thomas Aquinas' Spartan Regional Invitational at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex Friday.
With a time of 5:25.15, Askine recorded her first runner-up finish, to lead all four Greyhounds that competed in the event to top-seven finishes. Freshman Christina Daniels (fourth, 5:28.85), senior Erica Canas (sixth, 5:34.06) and senior Sara Gilson (seventh, 5:34.16) all scored in the mile to help Loyola collect 18 points in the event.
In the 800m, freshman MaryEllen Woods finished among the top five, taking fourth with a time of 2:25.70.
Sophomore Emma Dunleavy took sixth in the 400m, recording a final race time of 1:02.19. She, along with freshman Molly Smith, combined for four team points in the event. Smith finished the 400m race in 1:02.38, taking eighth overall.
A pair of 4x400m relay teams notched top-10 finishes, led by Smith, junior Jessa Laspesa, freshman Anne Lauder and Dunleavy. The quad finished fourth with a time of 4:09.28, while Verrichia, Ugarte and seniors Kayla Parlavecchio and Brianna Nelson placed sixth in 4:23.83.
Loyola's distance medley relay team of Askine, sophomore Daniella Joyce, Woods and Canas closed out the day's events with a seventh-place finish (12:51.19).
As a team, the Greyhounds finished 12th overall with 46 points. Rider took first with 179 points, while Manhattan and Ithaca rounded out the top three teams with 124 and 111.5 points, respectively.
The Greyhounds return to action Saturday, Jan. 23, at the Princeton Invitational.
