The Loyola men's and women's tennis programs gear up for the 2009 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships to take this weekend. Both teams will kick things off in the First Round on Friday.The Greyhound women received the third seed with their 5-2 conference record and will play #6 Manhattan at 11:00 a.m.
Loyola closed the regular season with a 7-0 victory over the Jaspers last week. Freshman Rachel Janasek played a tight match at No. 1 singles against Lindsey Keeler posting 3-6, 6-3 and finally a 10-6 win in the 10-point tiebreaker to seal the match win. Junior Keri Swan also played a three-set match against Manhattan's Casey Conklin. She played 1-6, 6-1 and finally 6-4 in the tie-breaker to take the win at No. 4 singles.
A win over Manhattan on Friday will advance the Greyhounds to the Semifinals where they will face either #2 Fairfield or #7 Saint Peter's on Saturday at 9 a.m.
The women's team beat Saint Peter's 6-1 back in March, sweeping the doubles point and winning four singles matches in straight sets. Sophomore Andie Keyser-Baker grabbed the sixth point in a three-hour match at No. 3 singles against Meredith Earley. Her final score was 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3.
Loyola fell to the Stags 5-2 in regular-season play. The Greyhounds had two singles winners, Janasek at No. 1 and sophomore Joy Johnson at No. 5. Freshman Judy Lite fought at the number six position, losing 0-6 in the first, winning 6-3 in the second, and then losing 1-6 in the third.
The Greyhounds other loss this season came against Niagara. The women's team lost a close 4-3 match up, taking the fall in doubles play. Keyser-Baker, Johnson and Lite were the three singles winners. The Purples Eagles hold the #1 spot in the Championship.
The Loyola men will kick things off in the First Round against #5 Niagara at 1:30 p.m. on Friday. The Greyhounds finished 3-3 in the MAAC and were picked as the fourth seed after a three-way tie between Loyola, Niagara and Saint Peters.
Loyola took a 6-1 victory over Niagara in regular-season play. Freshmen Keyan Sanai and Kevin Zingler played in three-set matches at No.1 and No. 3 singles. Sanai took the win over Niagara's Marc Dickinson after playing 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 7-5 at the top spot. Zingler won a 6-2 first set, lost 4-6 in the second and won a 6-2 third set for the win at No. 3 singles.
If the Loyola men advance to the Semifinal Round, the team will face #1 Fairfield. The Greyhounds fell to the Stags 7-0 in March, although the team fought hard in singles play. Three Loyola men played in three-set marathon matches, each lasting about two hours. Zingler played Aaron Chan at No. 3 singles and took the early lead with a 6-3 win in the first. He lost 2-6, 1-6 in the second and third to close the match. Junior Matt McDaniel faced Rob Ferrante at No. 4 and fought all the way to a 5-10 loss in the super tiebreaker to lose the match. Freshman J. Pierce Norton lost 6-3, 3-6, 2-6 at No. 2 singles against Dan Sauter of Fairfield.
The 2009 MAAC Tennis Championships will be held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, N.Y from April 17-19.
