EDISON, N.J. - Loyola women's tennis was picked to finish the 2009-2010 season in fourth place, while the men were picked to finish in fifth place, as announced by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference office Wednesday, in Edison, N.J.
MAAC tennis coaches gave Loyola's women the highest point total of the two teams, with 37 points. The men received 21 points.
Marist and Fairfield were picked to finish 1-2 in both polls. In the men's poll, Marist received 48 points and Fairfield just behind the Red Foxes with 43 points. In the women's poll, Fairfield was a near-unanimous decision for first place, receiving a whopping 63 points. Marist's women received 49 points for second place, and Niagara came in just three points behind.
The Greyhounds are already off to a good start in 2010, as both the men and women registered wins over Saint Francis (N.Y.) last weekend at Baltimore's Green Spring Racquet Club. So far in 2009-2010, the women are 3-0 in head-to-head matches and the men are 2-1.
The Loyola women return five all-conference players, including 2008-2009 MAAC Rookie of the Year Rachel Janasek. In h er standout freshman campaign, Janasek recorded 17 singles wins and 14 doubles wins to lead the team.
Also returning is junior Joy Johnson, who tied with Janasek for the most singles wins last season, and was a first-team all-MAAC selection after going 9-0 against conference opponents. Johnson's doubles partner, junior Andie Keyser-Baker, returns as well.
