Women's Tennis Ties For Third At MAAC Championships

Flushing, N.Y. - The Loyola women's tennis team closed Sunday's MAAC Championship action with a 3-3 tie against Siena at the U.S. Open in Flushing, N.Y. The Greyhounds and Saints, therefore, tie for third overall at the conference championships.

Loyola jumped out front early on Sunday, winning the doubles' point with freshmen Caitlyn Day and Stephanie Dunn clinching the hard-fought point with a 9-8 win at No. 1 doubles. The freshman duo won the tiebreaker 7-5 and gave Loyola a 1-0 lead thanks to junior co-captains Meaghan McKenna and Mallory Tarca winning 8-4 at No. 3 doubles.

In the singles' competition, McKenna and Tarca gave Loyola its second and third points with wins at Nos. 5 and 6. McKenna captured a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles, while Tarca claimed a 6-1, 5-7, 7-4 win at No. 6.

The match was called with Dunn and Siena's Karina Davis knotted at 1-1 in their second set. Top-seeded Marist won the championships while Niagara finished second.
