Flushing, N.Y. - The Loyola women's tennis team opened the 2007 MAAC Championships with a 4-3 win over Manhattan on Friday morning. The Greyhounds fell behind early, but rallied for the victory to advance to Saturday's semifinals at the U.S. Open in Flushing, N.Y.
Loyola dropped the doubles' point despite a win from junior co-captains Meaghan McKenna and Mallory Tarca at No. 3 doubles. The Greyhounds fell behind 2-0 after Manhattan's Jennifer Fowler topped Caitlyn Day at No. 1 singles.
The Greyhounds, however, responded with straight set wins at Nos. 2, 4, 5 and 6 singles. Freshman Kerri Swan earned a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles, freshman Lauren Cassle won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 while McKenna (6-2, 6-1) and Tarca (6-4, 6-0) won at Nos. 5 and 6 singles respectively.
Loyola will play top-seeded Marist in the semifinals at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.
