Baltimore, Md. - The Greyhound men's and women's tennis teams defeated Morgan State in match play on Wednesday afternoon at Loyola's courts.
The women's team increased the spring season record to 4-0 with a 5-2 victory over the Bears. The men's team remained undefeated with a 4-3 match victory, clinching the winning point from doubles play.
"The men two out of three to clinch the doubles point," Head Coach Rick McClure said. "That turned out to be the pivotal point in the match."
The team of freshmen Keyan Sanai and J. Pierce Norton kicked things off with an intense 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles. Sophomores Dan D'Agostino and Jamie Russo played at No. 3 doubles and won 8-3 to take the doubles point for the Greyhounds. Freshman Kevin Zingler and junior Matt McDaniel played at the number two spot, but fell to their Morgan State doubles team opponents, 8-3.
On the women's side, Loyola swept the doubles point, starting with the 8-5 victory at No. 1 doubles behind freshman Rachel Janasek and junior Kerri Swan. Sophomores Andie Keyser-Baker and Joy Johnson won at No. 2 doubles play with a quick 8-1 victory. Juniors Caitlyn Day and Stephanie Dunn finished women's doubles action with a 8-1 win at the third spot.
The women's team had four singles victories, starting with Janasek at the top spot with her 6-3, 6-4 win. Johnson and Dunn won their singles matches at number four and six singles, respectively and freshman Judy Lite was victorious at No. 5 singles, winning 6-1, 6-2.
The Greyhound men had three singles victories. Norton won at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-3, and D'Agostino won 6-1, 6-2 at the five spot. Russo finished things off with his 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles.
Loyola travels to Dover, Del. on Friday to play Delaware State at 3:00 p.m.
