BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland junior midfielder Deja Walker (La Plata, Md./St. John's Prep) has been invited to participate in the Philippine National Women's Football Team (Matildas) training camp next month.
The Matildas, as they are known on the international soccer circuit, will convene in Fullerton, Calif., for a weeklong camp in mid-November that will determine the 23 players who will make up the roster for the 2012 L.A. Vikings Cup.
Joining Walker at the camp will be current Matildas player and former Loyola standout Heather Cooke (California, Md./Leonardtown H.S.).
Walker suffered a knee injury during the summer and has not played this season, but she is expected to be cleared shortly after the Loyola season ends. Last year, her first at Loyola, she played in 17 games and started three. She scored her first collegiate goal on October 28 against Manhattan College.
The native of Southern Maryland came to Loyola after starting her collegiate career at the University of Wisconsin where she played in four games during 2010.
Cooke earned All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference honors as a junior and senior in 2008 and 2009 as a center back for the Greyhounds, has played with the Matildas in past international competitions.
The L.A. Vikings Cup is an invitational tournament that will be played November 21-December 2, in Fullerton. It will include two professional teams from California - the host Vikings and the California Cosmos - and national teams from Trinidad & Tobago and The Philippines.
