CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Loyola University Maryland women's soccer senior Kelly Santangelo was named the Corvias Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week for her contribution in the Greyhounds' 2-0-0 weekend during the Battle of Baltimore. Sophomore Maddie Boccio and senior Colleen Folan were also included among the week's honorable mentions.
Santangelo provided a strong presence on the backline, winning a number of aerial balls, which returned offensive possession to the Greyhounds. The Sayville, New York, native cleared three balls off the backline and guided the defense to two shutout victories against Towson University (1-0) on Friday and Mount St. Mary's University (2-0) on Sunday.
Boccio combined for three points in both matches, contributing one assist on Friday and the game-winning goal on Sunday.
Folan totaled six saves on the weekend, recording back-to-back shutouts against the Tigers and the Mount.
The Greyhounds open Patriot League action on the road against College of the Holy Cross, Saturday, Sept. 20. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
