CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Loyola University Maryland women's soccer graduate student Colleen Folan and junior Nicole Wahlig were named the Patriot League Goalkeeper and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, as announced by the League office Monday.
The duo led Loyola to a record of 1-1 in the Battle of Baltimore over the weekend, defeating UMBC, 2-0, Friday night, and giving up only one goal to Towson University Sunday afternoon.
Wahlig provided a dominating presence in the air, finishing the weekend with three header attempts. She won a number of 50/50 balls and made defensive slides at UMBC to keep the Retrievers off the board for the entire 90 minutes. Against Towson, Wahlig kept the Tigers' leading scorer, Natalia Pickney, off the scoreboard for the entire game. She pressured Towson's offense, pushing the Tigers to their defensive half of the field. Wahlig once again came up big Sunday afternoon making sliding stops and blocks, particularly in the second half, to keep the Tigers from tallying an additional goal. In the 70th minute, Towson's offensive gained possession inside the box, but Wahlig was face-to-face with her attacker and blocked a shot from scoring range.
Folan recorded her first clean sheet of the season against UMBC Friday night. The veteran goalkeeper played all 90 minutes, recording four saves against the Retrievers.
This is the second career weekly award for Wahlig, while it marks the first time this season a Greyhound has been honored. For Folan, this is her third career weekly award.
Loyola will open its 2015 Patriot League schedule on Saturday, hosting Lafayette College at 7 p.m.
