Women's Soccer Wraps Up Road Trip Tuesday at Maryland

Aug. 31, 2009

Off to their best start since the 2004 season, the Greyhounds (2-1) will make the 35-mile trek to College Park to take on the Maryland Terrapins (3-0) under the lights Tuesday, September 1, on the Terps' Ludwig Field. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 pm. Fans may follow the action live on Gametracker at www.loyolagreyhounds.com or may listen to live play-by-play on www.wmucsports.com.

The matchup will be the 10th time the teams have met with Maryland taking eight of the previous nine meetings. The Greyhounds however, behind then-freshman goalkeeper Brittany Henderson, took the last meeting at Maryland, 1-0.

Now a senior, Henderson has racked up numerous accolades including first-team all-conference honors in 2007 and 2008 and being named the MAAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2007. Henderson now has 18 career shutouts including both of her victories at Mount St. Mary's (1-0) and High Point (3-0) to open the 2009 season.

Loyola is led offensively by freshman Tessa McClenahan (2 g, 1a), graduate student Theresa Ferraina (1 g, 2a) and junior Kelly Farrell (1 g, 5 shots). The trio has taken 20 combined shots, which accounts for half of the Greyhounds' attempts this season, and also matches the number of shots taken at Henderson.

Maryland opened its season with victories over Army, Fordham and Seton Hall, allowing just one goal in the process. Sophomore Jasmyne Spencer tallied three of the team's seven goals, while freshman Caitlin Mooney added a pair. Senior goalkeeper Mary Casey, a first team all-ACC selection in 2008, anchors the defense which has long been considered the strength of the Terrapins' squad.

Following Tuesday's match, the Greyhounds will host Boston University for the first time in program history Friday, September 4. The Terriers were unanimously picked as the America East favorite and are seeking their fifth straight NCAA appearance.
