CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Loyola University Maryland women's soccer sophomore Nicole Wahlig has been named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week for her performance in the Greyhounds' season-opening victory at George Mason on Friday. Junior Rosy Hayes and senior goalkeeper Colleen Folan were also included among the week's honorable mentions.
Wahlig guided the defense to a 2-0 shutout victory over the Patriots, proving to be a dominating presence in the air. The East Meadow, New York, native won a number of aerial balls for Loyola, which created offensive looks for the Greyhounds. She also cleared a corner kick to maintain the shutout and keep George Mason scoreless for 90 minutes of action.
This marks the first weekly award for Wahlig, while she also becomes the first Greyhound to earn Patriot League weekly honors for the 2014 season.
Hayes scored the first goal of the year in the 33rd minute, taking a rebound and shooting from the left side of the goal.
Folan recorded her first-career shutout, tabbing three saves in the season opener.
The Greyhounds return to the road, traveling to Catonsville, Maryland, to face UMBC Monday, Aug. 25, at 7 p.m.
