Courtney Arikian Headlines MAAC Preseason Soccer Awards

Baltimore, Md. - Senior midfielder Courtney Arikian headlined the 2006 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's soccer preseason honors announced by the conference office Thursday. Arikian was named the preseason Player of the Year and was joined by her teammates Brynn McGrath, Sarra Moller and Carolyn Kennington on the preseason All-MAAC team. As a team, the Greyhounds were picked to finish second among the conferences 10 teams, just behind first-place Fairfield. The preseason poll is voted on by the league's 10 head coaches.

Arikian has earned a spot on the all-conference team all three seasons with the Greyhounds. She was named a second-team selection as a freshman while also earning a spot on the conference's all-rookie team. In both her sophomore and junior seasons, Arikian was named a first-team selection as well as earning a spot on the all-tournament team. Last season she was second on the team in goal scoring with seven while adding four assists. Arikian ranks ninth in Loyola history in goals with 17 career goals to date and 10th in points with 43.

McGrath, a junior defender, enters her second season with the Greyhounds. In 2005, she was named to the All-MAAC first-team for her performance. Moller, a sophomore, was named the 2005 MAAC Defensive Player of the Year. Kennington, a senior, has earned a spot on either the first or second-team every season with the Greyhounds. As a freshman she was named the MAAC Rookie of the Year and the conference tournament's Most Valuable Player. Over her career, she has scored 25 goals and tallied 22 assists for 72 career points. Kennington currently holds the Loyola record in assists and ranks second in all-time points and third all-time in goals.

As a team, the Greyhounds received 91 points in the poll and were picked to finish second, just two points behind first-place Fairfield with 93 points. Niagara was picked third with 75 points, and Iona finished in fourth place with 62 points. Siena placed fifth (59), followed by Marist (53), Manhattan (42), Canisius (35), Rider (29) and Saint Peter's (11).

Loyola opens its 2006 women's soccer season at Arizona State on August 28.
