April 22, 2010
Just a year after recording arguably the best year in program-history (15-5-3, 9-0 MAAC), the Loyola women’s soccer team can now focus on the 2010 season as head coach Katherine Remy Vettori officially announced the upcoming season schedule today. The Greyhounds return eight starters from last year’s squad, including leading scorer Nichole Schiro and five other All-Conference performers.
The Greyhounds, who advanced to their seventh NCAA College Cup in 2009 after recording a program-record 14-game unbeaten streak, open the season in their new stadium, the Ridley Athletic Complex, against cross-town rival Towson on August 21 at 7:00 p.m.
Following the opener, Loyola will embark on the toughest non-conference schedule it has ever faced.
Loyola will make the trip to Lincoln, Neb. August 27-29 for the adidas Husker Classic, where they will face Creighton and the host Nebraska Cornhuskers. Creighton, who advanced to the MVC Championship game, will be the first Missouri Valley conference team the Greyhounds have ever faced, and Nebraska is just the second Big 12 team ever to play Loyola (the Greyhounds fell at Texas, 3-2, in 2004).
After their first trip to the Midwest, Loyola will return to the east coast for a pair of road games at William & Mary and North Carolina State before hosting George Washington (Sept. 10) and La Salle (Sept. 12).
A trip to the 2009 Big 12 regular season champion, Missouri Tigers, is next on the 2010 schedule on September 17. Then, Loyola will take on Saint Louis on September 19.
Local teams will make the trip to Baltimore as Loyola wraps up its non-conference slate at home against UMBC (Sept.22) and Mount St. Mary’s (Sept. 24).
The final two teams Loyola defeated in the 2009 MAAC Championship are in Baltimore as the Greyhounds open conference play against Canisius (Oct. 1) and Niagara (Oct. 3).
Trips to Siena and Marist come prior to a home weekend set against Fairfield (Oct. 15) and Iona (Oct. 17).
Loyola ends the regular season on a three-game road swing to Manhattan, Saint Peter’s and Rider before hosting the MAAC Championship held at Loyola’s Ridley Athletic Complex November 5-7.
