Loyola's women's soccer team is on a tour of Italy during the College's 2009 Spring Break. Senior Amanda Piccirilli writes the first installment of a blog that will detail the team's travels.
VENICE, Italy - Greetings friends and family!!
After a long seven hour overnight flight to Paris, a three hour layover in Paris and a two hour plane ride from Paris to Venice, we have FINALLY made it to Italy!!!
We arrived in Chioggia Sottomarina at 7 p.m. on Saturday night, where we settled ourselves into our hotel we'll be living out of for the next four nights. Later that night we ate our first real Italian meal, and it is one we'll remember for the rest of our lives.
Italians sure love to eat and we experienced that with a three course meal. First course: a large bowl of pasta and tomato sauce; Second course: French fries and pork; and the third course: a cheesy caramelized dessert. After a delicious meal and a full day of traveling, it was time for us to all turn in and get well rested for our trip to Venice on Sunday.
Sunday morning, we started our day at 9 a.m. by driving down the street to a local boat dock, Chioggia Pier. At the dock, the team jumped onto a ferry boat which was our source of transportation to the beautiful city of Venice.
After an hour boat ride we arrived in Venice. We started our sightseeing by taking Gondola rides through the gorgeous canals, seeing restaurants and historical building that have been there since the city was built.
We then met up with our English-speaking tour guide who walked us through the streets of Venice for two hours. She showed and explained the history behind St. Mark's Square, St. Mark's Cathedral, the Duke's Palace, Bridge of Sighs, St. Mark's Abbey, the national library, the prisons and much more.
After the tour, we grabbed a delicious pasta lunch and then watched a glass blowing demonstration. After the glass blowing we had the rest of the afternoon to roam the streets of Venice. Many of us shopped and others continued to sight see and go into museums.
After several hours in Venice, it was time to get back on the ferry and go back to the hotel. For dinner we had our first taste of real pizza...YUMMY!!!
Tomorrow (Monday) is our first soccer match against ACF Venezia and we continue play on Tuesday against Tavagnacco FC. Wednesday we will be leaving Chioggia and heading to Florence for the day. I will update you all on scores as soon as we arrive in Florence.
Hope all is well in the States!
