Women's Soccer Anounces 2006 Recruiting Class

Baltimore, Md. - Head coach John Byford announced the signing of four recruits for the 2006 season Wednesday. The Greyhounds will add Heather Cooke, Kelly Farrell, Christina Gomez and Brittany Henderson to the women's soccer squad in 2006.

"We graduated a strong group of players this year," Byford said. "But I feel this incoming class has the quality to fill their shoes."

Cooke is a defender from Leonardtown, Md. who played at Leonardtown High School and with the Bethesda Extreme club team. Cooke, a team captain at Leonardtown, was named first-team all state as a junior and senior and earned the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference's Most Outstanding Player award as a senior. Cooke's club team, the Bethesda Extreme won the state championship in 2005. Cooke has participated in the Maryland ODP program for the last three years and has been a National Honor Roll Student since 2003.

"Heather is a great athlete and a very competitive individual who will only get better," Byford said.

Farrell, a midfielder, is from Oceanside, N.Y. where she attended Oceanside High School. Fareell played at the club level for the Albertson Fury. She has been involved in the Eastern New York ODP program since 2001 and was on the Region 1 ODP team in 2002.

"Kelly is a very versatile player who can play midfield or forward," Byford said. "She has tremendous drive and determination."

Gomez is a forward from Allendale, N.J. where she played soccer at Northern Highlands Regional High School and with the World Class club team. At Northern Highlands, she was the team captain and earned all-state first team and was a candidate for All-America honors. Her club squad was the New Jersey State champions in 2005. Gomez was also a member of the New Jersey ODP team from 2001-04 and was a member of the Region 1 ODP team from 2001-03.

"Christina, like Kelly, is a versatile player that can play forward or midfield," Byford said. "She is a very creative player."

Henderson, a goalkeeper, from Commack, N.Y. played soccer at Commack High School and with the Commack Emeralds club team. As Commack's team captain, she was an all-state selection as well as an All-America semi-finalist. Henderson also captained the Commack Emeralds who were State Cup winners from 2003-05 while she was a member and were regional finalists in 2005. She was a member of the Eastern New York ODP team from 2000-04 and of the Region 1 ODP team from 2001-04. Henderson was a national pool player from 2002-04.

"Brittany is a very accomplished goalkeeper and puts us in the enviable position of having two excellent players at that position," Byford said.

The Greyhounds finished the 2005 season with an 15-5 overall record.
