Lake Buena Vista, Fla. - Fairfield broke a 1-1 tie with a penalty kick at the 80th minute of play to upset No. 1 seeded Loyola, 2-1 in the semifinal round of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament. The Stags, the fifth seed, improve to 9-6-3 on the season while the Greyhounds fall to 15-4-0.
The Stags opened scoring at 13:26 when Shannon Helm scored unassisted during a scuffle in front of the goal to take the 1-0 lead.
The score remained 1-0 through the first half and much of the second until junior Carolyn Kennington scored the equalizer at 61:36 on a spectacular kick from well above the top of the box.
Both teams fought hard for nearly the next 20 minutes until a penalty kick by Fairfield's MT Church changed the scoreboard. Church's kick in the 80th minute would prove to be the game winner.
The Greyhounds held a 15-4 advantage in shots and worked the ball well offensively but were unable to come up with a tying goal.
Freshman keeper Amada Piccirilli recorded one save in goal while Fairfield's Brett Maron stopped five shots.
