LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Senior Nichole Schiro led the Loyola University Maryland women’s soccer team to their final regular season victory of the year, shutting out Siena College 1-0 at Siena Field.
Loyola left Sunday’s conference matchup 10-5-4, 6-2-1 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play. The Saints fell to 6-11-1 (2-6-1 MAAC). The conference win secures the No. 3 seed for the Greyhounds in the MAAC Championships.
“This is always a tough road trip,” said Head Coach Katherine Remy Vettori. “We are pleased with the result today, and looking forward to the MAAC Championships with four great teams.”
Schiro scored the solo goal for the Greyhounds in the 26th minute, as Lauren Norcia sent a thru-ball to Schiro, who scored inside the far post. With her game-winning goal against Siena, Schiro leads the MAAC with 14 goals this season.
Both teams played evenly with eight shots in the first half. Siena eventually out-shot Loyola 18-15, with ten shots in the second half.
Defensively, Didi Haracic made five saves, and played in her sixth shutout game of the season.
Loyola ends the season third in the MAAC regular-season standings, guaranteeing the team a trip to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., for the MAAC Championships next weekend. The Greyhounds will take on Fairfield University Friday, November 2 at 5 p.m.
