BALTIMORE - Senior Nichole Schiro notched her second career hat trick Friday night to lead the Loyola University Maryland women's soccer team to a 3-0 win over Niagara at Ridley Athletic Complex.
With the win, the Greyhounds move to 8-4-4 overall and 4-1-1 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, while Niagara falls to 8-8-0 this year and 3-4-0 in league play.
Schiro recorded her first goal in the 25th minute after junior Jenny Thornton dribbled the ball up the right side of the field. Thornton then dodged defenders and sent a cross to Schiro in the box, who headed it into the left side of the net for the game's first goal.
The Okemos, Mich., native tacked on a second goal midway through the second half when senior Brittany Yancey played a through ball to a streaking Schiro. Schiro beat her defenders to the ball and played it ahead before firing a shot past Niagara goalkeeper, Amanda Taylor.
Schiro's third goal was identical to her second, but it was classmate Gigi Mangione who played the ball ahead to Schiro. After beating defenders, Schiro drew the goalkeeper and sent another shot into the back of the net to complete her first hat trick since notching three goals in a win over Manhattan on October 28, 2011.
Defensively, the Greyhounds were just as impressive. Junior Didi Haracic finished the game with a game-high six saves, including a diving save on a shot from inside the box in the 39th minute. Haracic also punched a header into the cross bar to post her fifth shutout of the season and fourth in MAAC play.
In the 71st minute, Chelsea Doughty sent a header to the left side of the goal, but Mangione was there to keep the ball from crossing the goal line.
The Greyhounds will look to extend a four-game unbeaten streak on Sunday when they host Canisius on Senior Day at 1 p.m. Prior to the start of the game, Loyola's 12 seniors will be honored.
